Learning Descriptive Text with the First Grade

Yesterday on Monday, 17th 2014 I thought about ‘Descriptive Text’ in the first grade. Firstly I divided the students into 5 groups. Then I gave them different simple descriptive texts for each group. I gave them some minutes to read the text and guess what kind of text it is. some students answered with the wrong answer but fortunately one of my students could guess it. After that I explained about descriptive text to them. After knowing the social function and the generic structure of descriptive text, I asked them to identify their text. finally I asked them to make their own text according to the topic that I’ve given. these are some of their descriptive texts :

My Mother (2) (Descriptive Text)

I will tell you something about my mother. My mother’s name is Diana. She is from Bekasi, but she has lived in Demak, her husband’s city for 23 years. She is a tender woman. For example, when my sister and I are sleeping, she comes into our room, no matter what the hour, and she kisses us. She does the same thing every night.
My mother helps people wherever they need her. One day, a poor boy came to our home with a big wound on his arm, and my mother cured him. However, when she gets angry, she really does.
Last year, my brother broke a living room lamp, and she made him buy a new one with his own money. Right now she is living in a small town with my father and her children.

My Father (Descriptive Text)

The most important person in my life is my father. He has been the example for me to develop my social and professional life. In my social life, he shows me how to be with people and what behavior I need to have in different situations. For example, I talk or behave differently with a director of a company than with a worker. My father could not study in school, but he has a lot of experience. He is a good worker with high responsibilities in his work. He also taught me that the most important responsibilities are to my work and my family.
My father was a very good baseball player when he was young. He likes all sports, and he taught me to play sports with a clear mind. My father is an average person. However, he has been the biggest person for me.

My Thrifty Mother (Descriptive Text)

My mother is very thrifty, and that is very important for our family happiness. If my mother wants to buy something, usually she checks the prices from several places before she decides where she wants to shop. Sometimes the difference of the price is not too much, but she likes to spend her time bargaining. By doing that, my mother saves some of her daily expenses.
On special occasions, like birthdays, my mother can make a special party without asking for additional money from my father. When my father is not at home, my mother can solve unexpected problems by using her savings from daily expenses. For example, sometimes our family needs extra money to go to the doctor or to buy medicine. My mother’s thrifty ways are helpful for all of my family.

My City (Descriptive Text)

My city, Huanzu, is a famous and beautiful city in China, and it is famous all over the world. It is set between the river and West Lake. Several hills spread around West Lake, and some mountains stand by the river. These give the city many beautiful scenes, and so Huanzu is famous for its beauty. It is beautiful in the spring when the trees bud green and the peach trees flower with their red blossoms. It is beautiful in the fall when the leaves turn yellow and red. And it is beautiful in the winter when the snow gives white clothes to the mountains. So Huanzu is beautiful all year. It is beautiful when the sunshine is bright because the hills make shadows in the lake. It is beautiful when the rain falls and makes the frogs rise from the lake. My city is always beautiful.
